Excellent turnout at the Community Connections Fair.
The spirit of connection was alive and well in Sechelt on April 18, thanks to the vision and dedication of Sunshine Coast Rotary member Michael McKenzie. As the organizer of the Community Connections Fair, McKenzie set out to create more than just an event. With the support of the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, he created a space where people could rediscover one another, explore new opportunities, and rebuild a sense of belonging that many communities have been working to restore since the pandemic.
What began as the Sunshine Coast Rotary Volunteer Fair has grown significantly over the past four years. Initially centred on volunteerism, the event reflected Rotary’s longstanding commitment to service above self. But as McKenzie continued to engage with community members, organizations, and local leaders, he recognized something deeper: the need for a broader, more inclusive platform that reflected the full ecosystem of support and engagement on the Sunshine Coast.
The result was the Community Connections Fair. An event that welcomed not only non-profits but also businesses and services that contribute to the community's well-being. From grassroots organizations to established service providers, the fair brought together a diverse group of participants, each offering pathways for involvement, support, and discovery. Attendees were invited to explore new interests, learn about local initiatives, and, most importantly, reconnect with one another.
McKenzie’s leadership exemplifies the kind of thoughtful community-building that Rotary strives to foster. By listening carefully to the community's evolving needs, he expanded the fair's vision to be more inclusive and impactful. His efforts remind us that connection is not just about gathering people in one place. It’s about creating meaningful opportunities for engagement, understanding, and shared purpose.
