Heidelberg Open House Brings Community Together with Rotary’s Support
The Sunshine Coast community came out in full force for the annual Heidelberg Open House, a family-friendly celebration that blended industrial education, community connection, and good old-fashioned fun.
Heidelberg, one of the Coast’s largest employers with more than 100 staff, opened the doors of its pit mine to give residents a behind-the-scenes look at how its operations contribute both locally and globally. Families enjoyed guided bus tours through the pit, the chance to climb onto massive machines, and a playful sandpile for kids. Giveaways—from T-shirts to little hard hats—added to the excitement, while snow cones, coffee, and hot chocolate kept visitors refreshed

A Feast for Over 1,000 Guests
At the heart of the day was a community barbecue hosted by the Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast, where more than 1,000 people were served hamburgers, hot dogs, vegan options, salads, and cupcakes. Heidelberg covered all costs, making the feast a free gift to the community, while Rotary supplied the grills, volunteers, and plenty of smiles.
Longtime Rotarian Tanya Hall said the joy of the event is what keeps her coming back year after year.
“It’s really fun, because so many people from the community come out. Everyone’s having a good time, enjoying a free lunch, and it just feels like a big celebration. The smiles make it worth it,” Hall shared.
A Partnership That Gives Back Twice
Rotary Club President Terry Miller described the day as a showcase of community spirit.
“Working alongside Heidelberg at the Open House shows the power of partnership. Rotary brings service, Heidelberg brings generosity, and together we create a day where families connect and the community shines,” Miller said.
For Rotary, the event is more than a chance to serve—it’s also a fundraiser. Heidelberg compensates the club for running the barbecue, and those funds are then directed into Rotary projects that benefit local youth, community initiatives, and international programs. As Hall put it, “It’s a win-win. The community gets a free day of fun, Heidelberg gives back, and Rotary turns that support into even more projects that improve lives.”
Strengthening Community Bonds
The atmosphere was electric, with families enjoying tours, kids laughing in the sandpile, and neighbours reconnecting over food and conversation. The Open House was more than an event—it was a living example of how local organizations and service clubs can come together to enrich community life.
